Photo Friday - Saint Anthony Falls

An icon of the Twin Cities, the Saint Anthony Falls are located northeast of downtown Minneapolis between the 3rd / Central Avenue Bridge and the Stone Arch Bridge. Also known as the Falls of St. Anthony, it was the only natural major waterfall on the Upper Mississippi River. I say was because the construction of a tunnel in 1869 caused part of the natural falls to collapse. To prevent this section of river from becoming a useless rapids area, a concrete overflow spillway (also called an "apron") was constructed. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, a series of locks and dams were built to extend navigation to points upstream.

The falls is the birthplace of the former city of St. Anthony and Minneapolis, as the water was a source of power for several…

It was less than two weeks ago I was telling you about some recently approved, enacted, or improved home buyer programs within Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and St. Louis Park. Now I have even more to tell you about.

First, the Ramsey County Housing and Redevelopment Authority has approved the acceptance of a $1.4 million federal grant to get buyers into suburban foreclosed properties in four target areas of Maplewood and Little Canada. The money in the Opening Doors program is to be used to buy property, demolish or fix up vacant buildings and provide financial assistance to qualified first-time homebuyers. Three parts of the program include:

  • $100,000 for deferred loans for eligible buyers who purchase a property in one of the target areas. Eligible…

Photo Friday - Pillsbury "A" Mill

Friday, April 17th, 2009 at 11:12am. 3259 Views, 1 Comments.

The Pillsbury "A" Mill is located at 300 2nd St SE, Minneapolis, MN, and it overlooks the St. Anthony Falls.  Of the giant flour mills that made Minneapolis the milling capital of the United States between 1880 and 1930, Pillsbury "A" Mill is the only one still standing.

Pillsbury A Mill

At the time it was built, the Pillsbury Company wanted a building that was beautiful as well as functional. Local architect LeRoy S. Buffington was hired to design it. The largest, most advanced mill in the world at its completion in 1881, the "A" Mill was the standard by which all other mills of its time were measured.  The six-story building had stone walls six feet thick at the base tapering to eighteen inches at the top. With improvements and additions over the years, it became the…

Falling in Love... with a House

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 at 10:27am. 945 Views, 2 Comments.

After several blog postings of home staging tips, techniques, and examples, it was time to revisit WHY home staging helps houses to sell. So, put on your lab coats, we are dissecting the science behind the falling in love with a house.

THE HUMAN BODY: Several chemical and physical reactions occur in the body when it encounters something it loves - pupils dilate, heart rate increases, and endorphins (happy hormones) flood the blood stream. Now, this may all seem very "unromantic," but these reactions trigger an emotional response which creates a memorable experience for buyers who are visiting your house.

THE EMOTIONAL RESPONSE: Studies indicate that buyers decide within 5 seconds of seeing a house if they like it or not. I believe that the emotional…

Early Spring Home Maintenance Checklist II

Monday, April 13th, 2009 at 10:40pm. 2252 Views, 0 Comments.

About a month ago, I wrote a post called Early Spring Home Maintenance Checklist. Well, this is going to be part two, or II, of that checklist. The first was spring home maintenance that could be taken care of, regardless of how bad the weather might get outside. It is Minnesota, after-all, and I don't need to tell you how unpredictable it is. Remember the snow storm on April 11, 2008? Ugh. This is a list of stuff you can probably start doing now that it seems to be really warming up outside (knock on wood). The spring selling season is really gearing up, so following these steps to make sure your home is in tip-top condition could make a big difference in its curb appeal.

  • Check and maintain roof shingles
  • Unclog and Secure Gutters and…

It's Friday, and I've decided that Friday's are going to be fun and photography related. Last week I showcased some fun photoblogs. Today, I'm going to showcase some of our own pictures from around the Twin Cities community.

Stone Arch Bridge

The first post is going to be about the Stone Arch Bridge. The Stone Arch Bridge crosses the Mississippi River at Saint Anthony Falls, between the 3rd Avenue Bridge and the I-35W Saint Anthony Falls Bridgein downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was built originally in 1883 by railroad tycoon James J. Hill to be railroad bridge for his Great Northern Railway. There was also a passenger station on the west bank of the river.

Stone Arch Bridge

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 as a part of the Saint Anthony Falls…
